text is etched into the stainless steel as shown. It is not paint. It is the
same process used to make the handles of my silverware black and that has been
in and out of the dishwasher for years with no problem.
This pole is of such thick steel that baseball bats would break on it.

Explorations in Text
While I was exploring the various ways to make stainless steel peace poles, I also explored putting the text in the metal by cutting a groove in it. I also looked into making a round stainless steel peace pole, which is an interesting way to go if you want dozens of languages, or even the more than a hundred translations that are available.
