Stage Five

The continuing development of the Underwater Peace Pole

Copper and bronze are the only choices for a pole that lasts without maintenance or replacement for an extended period of time in a saltwater environment. I have experimented with the ways to put text on it. No adhesives work with these materials in this environment. The letters might have be to cut out of copper or bronze and braised to the pole. I have yet to determine if the silver used in braising creates any problems.

Part of the experiment is to learn whether treating copper to create a patina reduces its antifouling properties. I am riveting copper together, placing text on it, and exposing portions of it to acid to create a patina.
