The Turkmen (sometimes spelled Turkomen, Turcoman, and Turkman) are one of the largest ethnic groups in Iraq. Some sources state that they are evenly split between Sunni and Shia Islam by faith.
Some think that the Turkmen of Iraq are a distinct ethnic group from the Turkmen in Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Iran, but others dispute this. What is of interest here is how, one way or the other, they are spread across the borders of those nations.
